Job title: Community Engagement Officer 

Reporting to: Engagement Manager

Responsible for: No staff

Based: British Science Association, Wellcome Wolfson Building, 165 Queen's Gate, London SW7 5HD

Working pattern: Full-time (35 hours per week), permanent. Requests for part-time or flexible working will be considered

Salary: £23,460 – £25,000

About the role

The main purpose of this role is to support the BSA's programmes with community groups.

Key responsibilities

The main responsibilities of this role are to: 

  • Recruit and support individuals to participate in the Community Leaders programme
  • Support the administration and evaluation of grants for community groups
  • Support the delivery of the Inclusive Science Engagement Network and internal EDI learning programme
  • Assist colleagues as needed and undertake other duties as directed by the line manager

About you

The Community Engagement Officer role would suit someone with an interest in public engagement with science, particularly supporting community groups and under-served audiences.

Essential

  • Experience or interest in the charity, voluntary, science engagement or a related sector
  • Experience of coordinating multiple projects at the same time 
  • Ability to build good working relationships with community leaders
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Clear written and oral communication skills

Desirable 

We do not expect candidates to have all the skills and experiences below, but some of the following would be useful: 

  • Experience of working with community groups
  • Knowledge of science engagement theory or practice

From time to time the job entails working extended hours and occasional weekends, for which no overtime payments are made. However, the Association does operate a time off in lieu policy.
