Today marks the start of British Science Week, and we couldn't be more excited! From organising your own event, to running our virtual 10k race, to taking part in our citizen science project, there are so many ways to get involved.

Run to the Deep

Following last year’s hugely popular virtual race, Run the Solar System, we’re delighted to announce a BRAND-NEW race for 2018: Run to the Deep.

Produced in partnership with Six to Start, the team behind Zombies, Run! (the world’s most popular smartphone fitness game), Run to the Deep is an immersive running app which chronicles a journey from the sea surface to the Marianas Trench – the deepest known part of the ocean – as you run over a 10k distance.

Explorer Pierre-Yves Cousteau, son of the famous conservationist Jacques Cousteau, narrates the virtual race, detailing alien creatures, amazing seascapes, and human exploration stories as you ‘descend’ to the ocean floor.

The race can be walked, jogged or ran anywhere.

Take part in our citizen science project

Following David Attenborough’s stunning Blue Planet II, ocean wildlife is at the forefront of everyone’s minds, especially with ways in which we can learn more about the seas and protect the creatures living there. We hope our citizen science partnership this year can play a part in this, but we need your help.

Clean up our seas from the comfort of your home with this year’s citizen science project, The Plastic Tide. This small charity made up of ocean, science and tech enthusiasts have scoured the UK’s coastlines with a drone, taking pictures of our beaches to look for litter and plastics.

The images are available online for anyone to search and “tag” pieces of rubbish. During British Science Week, we have a target to tag 250,000 images. By going through the pictures and picking out the litter, you’ll be training an algorithm to do this itself.

Download our activity packs

Our free activity packs are filled with simple, engaging science experiments and games that you can try at home, school or with your youth group. The theme for this year’s activity packs is 'exploration and discovery.' We want to encourage young people to think about everyday discoveries and journeys by exploring the world around them. Click here to download them for free.

Enter the poster competition 

Get creative and enter the British Science Association’s annual poster competition, on the theme of exploration and discovery. There's great prizes up for grabs so don't miss out! Deadline: 6 April. Find out more here. 

Organise an event

Running an event of your own may seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be complicated. An event could be as small as downloading and having a go at our fun activity packs, perfect for the classroom or at home.
